The Monitoring Group on Cultural Heritage in the Baltic Sea States consists of representatives from the cultural heritage sector in the Baltic Sea region. Norway is represented by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage and the Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority. The countries participating are the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland), the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Russia, Poland and Germany.

The work of the group mainly consists of network building and the mutual exchange of experience. As a rule two meetings are held annually. Four permanent working groups have also been established to work on more specific and practical assignments. A fifth group is also operative at the present time.

These working groups are as follows:

Building Preservation and Maintenance in Practice

Coastal Culture and Maritime Heritage

Sustainable historic towns

Underwater Heritage

Children and adolescents/cultural heritage and learning

The Monitoring Group is one of several subgroups under the auspices of The Council of the Baltic Sea States, CBSS. Norway assumed the Presidency of this Council in July 2010.
