The beginning
The establishment of Røros Mining Town was based on the discovery of a copper ore in 1644. The specific operating practises and the culture that developed were closely associated with the existing natural features – the mountain plains, the cold climate and the remote location with no passable roads for most of the year. These factors came to characterize all activities in the region.

Extension of the World Heritage Area
The property “Røros Mining Town and the Circumference” comprises three areas: The town and Cultural Landscapes, The Femundshytta smelter and the Winter Transport Route. We cannot fully understand how the mining town functioned without considering the area of privileges, the Circumference. The Circunmference is proposed as a buffer zone. The buffer zone thereby has a value in addition to protecting the Property visually. It is a key instrument for understanding the Property, and places it in a wider historical and functional context.
